Rotor

Definitions

• A turbulent circulation under mountain-wave crests, to the lee side and parallel to the mountains creating the wave. Glider pilots use the term rotor to describe any low-level turbulent flow associated with mountain waves.
• May be found embedded in mountain waves. Formation usually occurs where wind speeds change in a wave, or where friction slows the wind near the ground. See Figure 4-22 of this handbook for a graphical representation of rotors.
• A complete system of rotating airfoils creating lift for a helicopter.
• A complete system of rotating airfoils creating lift for a helicopter or gyroplane.
